Choose the right AI tool for your workflow

To set you up for success, I want you to understand that all AI tools are NOT created equal. Each tool brings distinct trade-offs depending on your workflow:

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

Best For: All-around versatility, custom tools, and dynamic multimodal features (voice/data).

Strengths

  • Ecosystem & Versatility: Has the most expansive feature set, including Advanced Data Analysis (Code Interpreter), native image generation (DALL-E), and custom GPTs.
  • Voice & Multimodal: Offers industry-leading Advanced Voice Mode for natural, fluid verbal interactions. I highly recommend you watch the ChatGPT Voice Grandmas ad and just think about how powerful the AI engine must be to support those interactions.
  • Data & Analytics: Highly effective at taking spreadsheets/data sets, running Python code under the hood, and producing charts or statistical analyses.

Weaknesses

  • Context Memory: Has a smaller context window than Claude or Gemini, making it less ideal for digesting massive repos or multi-hundred-page documents.
  • Factual Hallucinations: Can occasionally generate confident-sounding incorrect details, particularly in complex edge cases.

Claude (Anthropic)

Best For: Deep coding, long document analysis, and natural, human-sounding tone.

Strengths

  • Code & Technical Logic: Widely considered top-tier for software development, debugging, and complex logical reasoning.
  • Writing Quality & Nuance: Delivers prose that feels less robotic and follows subtle instructions/constraints better than its competitors.
  • Document Processing: Keeps focus across long documents and complex contracts with high precision.

Weaknesses

  • No Native Web Search / Image Gen: Lacks real-time web browsing and built-in image creation tools.
  • Rate Limits: Its strict usage caps on paid plans can hit heavy users faster during intense coding/writing sessions.

Gemini (Google)

Best For: Ecosystem integration (Docs, Drive, Gmail), massive context windows, and real-time research.

Strengths

  • Massive Context Window: Capable of handling massive amounts of data at once (up to 1M–2M tokens), allowing you to upload entire codebases or hours of video/audio.
  • Google Workspace Integration: Works natively inside Docs, Sheets, Drive, and Gmail.
  • Search & Real-time Info: Excellent at pulling directly from live search and Google’s broader knowledge graph.

Weaknesses

  • Coding & Creative Formatting: Can feel less precise or structured than Claude when handling complex multi-file codebases.
  • Instruction Following: Occasionally over-summarizes or strays slightly from highly specific constraints compared to Claude.

Quick Verdict

Pick ChatGPT if you want an all-in-one assistant for voice, file/data analysis, and everyday general tasks. ChatGPT was the first AI tool I used, so I tried it for almost everything. But I caught it making mistakes in coding, so I moved the coding to Claude. And I often felt it wasn’t very thorough in its web searches, so I moved that kind of tasking to Gemini. However, it remains the go-to for my family. We use it plan vacations, shop for soccer cleats, figure out how to stop our raccoon (I mean, dog) from digging into all of the trash cans, etc.

Pick Claude if you do heavy coding, writing, or deep reasoning over technical documents. Ellyn and Snowden are having early success using Claude for audit content. I use it to troubleshoot server issues, write JavaScript for interacting with APIs, write CSS code for some of our websites, and write SQL for some of our reports.

Pick Gemini if you want seamless integration with Google Workspace, massive context windows, or live web search. I use Gemini most often because it’s ever-present in the Google ecosystem. Whether I’m in Gmail, Sheets, Drive, whatever – the icon is always in the upper-right corner. And since Chrome is part of the Google ecosystem, the icon is always in the upper-right of the browser window as well. I use it to search for cannabis licenses, summarize contracts and long email threads, draft blog posts (like this one), figure out complex Sheets formulas, and more!

  1. This is also super helpful. Does anyone know which makes the most realistic images? The one time I used AI was asking chatgpt to edit an image for me, and its result was accurate but looked obviously fake.

    • I haven’t done much with AI images (yet), but my understanding is that each of the major AI models taps a specialized image model. Gemini, for example, uses Imagen 3 / 4 and Nano Banana, automatically switching between the two depending on the context. I think I read somewhere that ChatGPT uses Dall-E 3, and I’m not sure what Claude uses. In AI terms, there’s a big difference between generating an image from scratch (show me a blue truck) and editing an image (change the color of the truck to red). So even though you didn’t like how ChatGPT edited an image, you might like how it creates images.
